10 Ways to Identify IRS Scams
There are many IRS scams that are out there. Learning red flags can help you spot scams and avoid them. In this article, we will go over 10 ways to identify IRS scams.
1. They’re Calling You First
First contact from the IRS will always be through the mail. They will never initiate contact with a phone call. If you are getting calls from people claiming to be with the IRS, alarm bells should be ringing.
2. You Receive a Prerecorded Voicemail
The IRS does not utilize prerecorded voicemails, and they never leave threatening voicemails.
3. They’re Emailing You
The IRS does not initiate contact through email. Especially not to request personal or financial information. If you receive a fake email pretending to be from the IRS do not reply, open attachments, or click any link on the email.
4. You’re Receiving Texts
The IRS does not start correspondence via text. Especially to discuss sensitive information.
5. You’re Contacted Via Social Media
Like the other forms of communication we’ve discussed, the IRS will not initiate contact via social media. Initial correspondence will always start out through the mail.
6. Sending or Referencing Forms That Are Not on the IRS’ Website
When receiving notices and forms, you can double check that they are legitimate by looking for copies on the IRS’ website. If a form is not on their website, don’t fill it out.
7. Don’t Have a HSPD-12 Card
A real IRS agent will carry two forms of identification with them. These are the pocket commission and HSPD-12 card. You have the right to ask to see their credentials and you can call the IRS to verify their identification is legitimate.
8. Ask for Card Information on the Phone
The IRS will never call and ask you to give them credit or debit card information over the phone.
9. Ask You to Pay with Gift Cards or Prepaid Debit Cards
If you owe the IRS, they will paper mail you a bill. You should only make checks out to the US Treasury, not a collection agency or other entity. The IRS will never request for you to send them gift cards or prepaid debit cards as payment.
10. Threatening You
The IRS will never call you and threaten to arrest you, deport you, or revoke your driver’s license. The IRS does not have the authority to revoke your persona license, business license, or immigration status.
